Vegan and Gluten Free Electrolytes

For a vegan diet, the usual candidates in sweets are gelatine, beeswax or shellac used as glazing agents, carmine as a red colour, and milk derivatives. None of these are inevitable in a lollipop — plenty of confectionery avoids all of them — but the only way to know is the ingredients list.

For gluten, EU law requires cereals containing gluten to be emphasised in the ingredients list wherever they appear. The regulated claim gluten-free means below 20 mg/kg, so it carries a defined meaning rather than a vague reassurance.

Unlike gluten-free, the term vegan has no single legal definition in EU food law. Brands and certification schemes apply their own criteria, which is why a certification mark or a clear ingredient statement is more useful than the word alone.

Shared production lines can lead to precautionary statements such as "may contain". These are voluntary and not a substitute for the allergen declaration, but if you react severely to an allergen they matter. Always read the final pack.
